helping you remember SAT definitions... the dirty way

torpid

torpid (adj.) – sluggish; inactive; slow

for your edification:  I’m sorry.  This one is so politically incorrect.  Or, health conscious.  Yeah.  Not politically incorrect: health conscious.  Anyway.  When you see “torpid”, you need to think of that store in the shopping mall, Torrid (which, if you remember, in the English language means “excessively hot” or “extremely passionate”) and how it makes clothes for girls who are “plus-sized.”  So, “Torrid” sounds a lot like “torpid.”  As I asked, I would like you to think of the store Torrid and the fact that it is clothing for heavy-set girls, and then associate the idea that they are overweight with the definition of torpid, which is sluggish, inactive, or slow.  For, you see, if you are overweight (shopping at Torrid), then oftentimes, you are also torpid – sluggish, inactive, or slow.  (Sometimes you are not!  But, if it helps you remember the definition of “torpid”, imagine that those overweight-Torrid-shoppers just may be inactive, sluggish, torpid teens.  Hey, teens:  eat right and exercise so you won’t be torpid, ya hear?

examplification -  Birthmark Tony:  Yo.  Thanks for giving me your sister’s number.  Our date was amazing.

Reginald:  No big.  Where did you end up going?

Birthmark Tony:  We met at East Point Mall and walked around that plus sizers’ store Torrid.

Reginald:  The whole date?

Birthmark Tony:  Yeah, dude.  Your sister’s a little sluggishtorpid, even – on account of her extreme overweightness and all.  You know I’m all about the gals who come packing a little extra sizage.  It took a while to get through that store as it seemed like the torpid Torrid shoppers moved a little slower than the average-sized shopper. I love ‘em all, however, amigo.  Every last pound of ‘em.

Reginald:  Wow.

editor’s note:  Oh, hey.  If you aren’t totally down with the completely sizist way I am recommending you remember this definition, I’ll now provide an alternate method.  Look at “torpid.”  The beginning is very close to “tortoise.”  Tortoises (Tortoi?) are pretty sluggish, inactive, and slow, eh?  Does this make you feel better?  If it helps you sleep at night, you’re welcome.
